UKD SEALION

Picture
UKD Sealion photographed at Fawley on 4 April 2015.

She is a 25m Multicat built by Damen Shipyards for UK Dredging and was designed to provide dredging support with bed levelling, buoy handling and survey capability. Her principal duties are bed levelling and her 10m plough is capable of working at a depth of 20m.

The Multicat form provides the stability to assist in dredging support, to handle floating pipelines and to act as a marine working platform. She is fully equipped with DGPS and digital mapping and can work with other dredgers or on a stand alone basis.

Winch arrangements permit three point anchoring allowing accurate positioning for holding the vessel on station in difficult tidal or weather conditions.

Accommodation is provided for 5 people.

Overall she is 25.97m long with a 10.06m beam and 2.55m maximum draught.

Speed is 9.6 knots via twin Cummins KTA 19M3 (2 x 477kW).

Bollardpull is 17.6t

CAUSEWAY

Picture
Trailing hopper suction dredger Causeway photographed on the 25 October 2014 in the Solent just South of Fawley. I took the picture from the Red Funnel ferry as we headed to the Isle Of Wight.

Overall she is 92.1m long with a 19m beam and 6.82m draught and is powered by twin Caterpillar 3516 (9472kW) diesel engines giving a top speed of 11 knots.

Hold capacity is 4500m3 of dredged material.

Her suction pipe has a diameter of 900mm and she can dredge up to 30m below sea level.

GT = 4320 and DWT 5950.

She is designed to operate up to 15 miles from shore or 20 miles from port or dredging over 15 miles from shore with a significant wave height of less than 2.5m.

The vessel is operated by Boskalis Westminster who commenced operations in 1933.

Since I saw her she has left the Solent area and at the time of writing is heading across the English Channel on her way to Calais.

Norma

Picture

On 23 April 2013 at the Mersey entrance to the Albert Dock Westminster Dredings Norma was hard at work in front of the main dock gates.

According to the internet this versatile vessel can operate in either water injection mode or as a plough boat. Water injection is achieved via two low pressure water pumps which circulate water to a specially designed injection head fitted with multiple water jets, the  combined output of these pumps being up to 7400m3 per hour. The injection head is brought into contact with the seabed and a pre-determined thickness
fluidised. Accurate horizontal positioning and track plotting is achieved using DGPS to enable targeted dredging.

Vertical control is achieved using tidal data transmitted from shore together with digital ladder depth indication. Twin Scottel azimuth thrusters permit a high degree of
manoeuvrability with the ability to dredge accurately and in confined areas.

ROAR R & HELGE R

Picture
Split Hopper Barges Roar R and Helge R photographed in Liverpool on 2 September 2013.

They are owned by Rohde Nielsen who are based in Nyhavn, Copenhagen, Denmark.

The company was established in 1968 by Captain Jens
Rhode Nielsen and operate worldwide as a marine dredging contractor, they specialise in beach nourishment (replacement or preservation of sandy beaches), land reclamation, port development, dredging, off shore  trenching and back filling as well as a number of other activities.

They operate a fleet of 39 specially built and highly manoeuvrable vessels whose shallow draughts enables them to work close to shore.

Roar R and Helge R have been purpose built to transport sand and silt from any area being dredged to the dumping or unloading site.

Both vessels have the same basic details and were built in 1979 by Drobeta-TS in Romania.

They are 60.3m long with a 11m beam and a 1.2m draught which increases to 3.56m when loaded.

Gross tonnage is 910 and net Tonnage 281.

The hold can accommodate 940m3 or 1737 tons of material and they are powered by CAT C18 ACERT main engines (2 x 339 kW at 1800 rpm) giving a speed of 8 knots when the  vessels are in ballast and 6 knots  when fully loaded.

The vessels were named after Helge and Roar who were sons of King Halfdan.

The story/saga from Danish Myths and Legends
goes that the King was murdered by his brother Frode who then tried to eliminate  Roar and Helge too. The boys both escaped and later arranged for Frode to die in
the fire of  his burning home. After the brothers are crowned Kings Roar becomes the King of  Lejre whilst Helge goes roaming and raiding as a Viking. Roar is
later attacked and killed whilst Helge is at sea, when he returns Helge kills his brothers slayers.
