The container ship Kota Carum (MMSI 566219000, IMO 9494577, Call sign 9V9338) passing me on the beach at Nabq, Egypt, 4 April 2013.

Registered in Singapore she was close on the heels of two French warships making use of the high tide.

She was built by Dalian SB Industry Co at their Dalian  #1 Shipyard in China as  Yard. No c6600-1 in 2011 and has a length of 286m, 40m beam and 76079 GT.

Kota Carum is owned by Pacific International Lines (PIL) which started operations  in 1967 and has developed from a coastal shipowner/operator in Singapore to become one of the largest shipowners in South-east Asia. Today, it is ranked  amongst the top container ship operators in the world, offering container liner services and multi-purpose services at over 500 locations in 95 countries worldwide.

As of May 2013, PIL owns or operates a fleet of 166 vessels with 11 new container vessels, 1 new multi-purpose vessel and 2 bulk carriers on order for delivery by December 2014.

PIL operates container liner services covering the whole of the Far East to Europe, Black Sea, Canada, the Indian sub-continent, Red Sea/Gulf, East Africa, South/West Africa, Australia, New Zealand, East Coast of South America and West Coast of USA. It also has a dedicated network of feeder services covering a comprehensive range of ports in South East Asia, the Bay of Bengal and the East Coast of India.

As a pioneer foreign shipping line that entered the China market in the 1960's, PIL presently offers its customers twenty container liner sailings a week out of China. It jointly owns and operates logistics centres in Ningbo, Shanghai, Wuxi and Xiamen.

My interest in ships and the sea started back in 2006 when I worked for a couple of years  on the banks of the River Mersey. I have since been on a couple of cruises around the Med and in the Far East and have started to take more interest in researching and photographing some of the ships and other vessels seen on my travels.
