SEAFARERS ALE

Picture
A beer mat that I picked up earlier in the year in Cowes and forgot about until I was preparing my overnight bag last week.

George Gale and Co were founded in 1847 but in more recent times have been bought by a much larger company.

It was originally developed as a tribute to Gales close association with all who sail on the seas and for every pint sold a donation is made to Seafarers UK which a maritime charity.

Ale's are not my kind of drink but it is advertised as having well developed fruity malt flavours and gentle bitterness sailing through to a satisfying hoppy finish.

SHIP LIST UPDATE

22/10/2015

I have finally got my list up to date, this has taken nearly two months and is all down to the shear number of vessels I saw whilst on holiday in August in Pattaya, Thailand.

To date I have seen 3,964 vessels with a total GT of 79,594,855. If you put all the vessels in a line they would stretch 562.47km or 349.5 miles.

Next week I am on holiday again on the Isle of Wight. The place where I stay overlooks the Solent so despite the sun going early I still hope to see a few new vessels.

I read that Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas will be in port in Southampton on Saturday which is the day we are sailing on one of the Red Funnel Ferries to East Cowes.

With a bit of luck I may also break the 4000 ship barrier.

ASHWORTH MILL

The ruins of Ashworth Mill photographed during our walk on 4 October 2015. I cannot find out much about this mill other than its name which appears on maps dating back to the mid/late 19th Century. We originally approached the mill from the West having took the wrong path which resulted in us being unable to cross the river. Quickly retracing our steps we were soon walking through the ruins.

The only major walls standing viewed as we approached the site.

Looking up at the wall from the river, this was once a substantial building but like other mill sites I have seen is slowly being reclaimed by nature.
Picture
Naden Brook heads South after passing the mill, this would at one time have supplied the power for the mill. Stones from the mill and retaining walls along the banking littered the stream bed.

COAL BANK MILL

Picture
We were out walking on 4 October 2015 near Norden and in a quiet valley where a stream called Mill Croft enters the much larger Naden Brook came across the ruins of Coal Bank Mill.

The mill was originally built as a cotton mill and is described as a bleachers and dyers in the ownership of Richard Bell in 1891. The mill was one of many in the area and I have seen references to 11 mills in and around Norden in the 1850's.

The mill is reported to have been destroyed by fire in 1916 although it seems to have been in use after this date, it's chimney was pulled down in 2006.

The ruins above are probably the most substantial above ground but there was evidence of many other parts of the building or perhaps other buildings in the locality.

My interest in ships and the sea started back in 2006 when I worked for a couple of years  on the banks of the River Mersey. I have since been on a couple of cruises around the Med and in the Far East and have started to take more interest in researching and photographing some of the ships and other vessels seen on my travels.
